Gold Leaf

24ct Gold leaf

Gold Leaf is one of the most exquisite metals. There are several variations of gold colors Midas gold leaf currently carries 12ct to 24ct pure gold. The higher the Ct the purer the gold, therefore 24ct is pure gold and 12ct is half gold and half other metals. The additional metals added to the gold leaf also helps in providing the various colors as well as giving the gold additional strength. Some examples of color variations would be white gold which would be mixed with nickel, manganese, or palladium. Gold that is greener in color such 16ct commonly called lemon gold would have silver added. Rose gold has copper added to give it reddish color.

Silver leaf is a popular material to work it slightly thicker than gold but thinner than copper leaf. Silver can be used in glass gilding and can create a mirror finish. While silver leaf is relatively easy to work but must be handled carefully just like gold leaf. Additionally, silver also tarnishes and requires a sealer to keep its color. Alternatively, silver leaf when aged properly can create interesting finishes.

Copper Leaf is affordable and easy to use. It is much thicker than gold leaf making it ideal for beginners to start their gilding journey. Copper can also be treated with a wide range of household chemicals to create beautiful patinas that will enhance the look of your projects.

Aluminum another affordable leaf its quite thick and can be used as a substitute for silver. Aluminum is also a great beginner metal as its affordable and easier to handle than gold and silver. Unlike Silver, Aluminum will not tarnish but will not have the same reflective qualities of silver

Imitation Gold is an alloy composed of copper and zinc. Its easy to work with and affordable making it a great option for beginners. Because of the copper it will tarnish. It is recommended that gloves be used to assist with discoloration. This leaf must also be sealed in order to prevent further discoloration.

Variegated leaf is a made up of various metals that has been treated with heat. When high heat is applied to the leaf it creates a reaction that produces a wide range of colors. The process can be further controlled to create specific patterns and colors through the use of hot plates. Like many of our other leaf products variegated leaf should be sealed to protect it.
